I don’t have a bird yet, though I’m hoping to get one soon. A parrotlet. Would this be an appropriate size for one?
It would be an appropriate size for *most* parrotlets.
A Pacific parrotlet would probably do fine in there, as would a Spectacled. But some Green Rumps are overwhelmed by cages that are too large.
I’d also suggest that if you’re getting a newly weaned baby parrotlet you start in a smaller cage. If you begin with a cage that’s 18″ x 18″ – or 20″ x 20″, you’ll be able to get to know your bird a bit until he steps readily onto your hand. You don’t want to have to try to talk him out of a really big cage (and wind up chasing him around and therefore scaring him). You’ll also want to be sure your bird is perching and climbing well before putting him in a really big cage. It’s usually a few months before you stop hearing the “oops…..thud” that comes with a young parrotlet accidentally falling from high up in the cage. The last concern is that *sometimes* a baby parrotlet that is immediately placed in a large cage will “revert”. It becomes overwhelmed by its huge new home and forgets it is supposed to be eating on its own. If it reverts, it will have to be hand fed a bit longer and then re-weaned.
I have both of my parrotlets in cages that are approximately the size you’re thinking about. But both of them began life with me in a 20″ x 20″ cage until we got to know one another – and until I stopped hearing that “oops….. thud”.
